More on Maya...

My Response Paper on Maya Deren for my Approaches to Video Art class blog:

Maya Deren has had an iron grasp on me since the moment I first learnt of her. Her passion and desire captivated me. She seemed so free and so aware of all beauty. I was instantly moved by the way she was able to appreciate how deeply she was stimulated by everything in all the realms of her senses. It felt like she was able to derive from, and physically feel inside of herself, meanings and emotions from simple images and movements in a way much stronger than most people do. I believe the reason she intrigues me so much is because of how similar she seems to me. Perhaps that is selfish and self-centered; but i feel connected to her, and i believe that is spurred by our overwhelming sensitivity to the simple and natural beauties surrounding us.

I love the fact that she began her artistic career as a poet. She used this outlet, and yet still felt stifled by it. She claimed she had to translate her thoughts from images into words; that she thought in photos. For her, the switch from poety to film was like “coming home.”

It impressed me how natural and expressive her films were; how forceful, deliberate and purposeful. For this reason I disagree with the opinion that her staring in them is a result of self-love or egocentricity. Rather, She is an artist. Who says that a film-maker has to only do the filming? She is the master-mind and she alone knows what and how she wants the film to look and end up. I can understand how she felt. She is making up the visual aspect of the film- she is creating the motions and movements and art. It is not a sign of selfishnes- it is her pure, raw, expression. Additionally, “the girl in the film is not a personal person. She is a personage. Mythological. Architypal.”

Someone said that she came from the sea and that her rooms were filled with sea shells and coral. What a beautiful compliment. She surrounded herself by natural beauty. It was also said that she was a person of limitless emotional power. Who came from a place of extreme vulnerability. These descriptions are what connected me most deeply with her. She lived every feeling, act, and thought deeply, thoroughly, and passionately. It proved to me even more the importance of every shot/scene/location/movement to her and what she was attempting to get across to “the human realm.”

Additionally, her sense of Time Quality really resonated with me. The fact that a contained space is no longer appropriate, and that she has one image becoming another, constant motion and collages of images and locations. It is liberating. A conglomeration of feelings and sights. Everything is happening at once because there is no time constraint.

The night after we watched her films in class, I had a dream/vision where her head was huge and floating in the air above my bed. It was kind of scary because she had the metal balls over her eyes and was holding the knife like in Meshes of the Afternoon. Although it was slightly terrifying she seemed to be comforting as well; as if she were trying to tell me something. I don’t know why I had this experience, but it impacted me and I am curious to see Maya’s continuous role in my own life.

i watched The Virgin Suicides. i liked it, but it didnt live up to the hype everyone has cushioned around it. so many photo shoots and editorials that i have loved claim to spur from this film, but i can barley grasp the resemblances. it felt like a shrine to Kirsten Dunst's beauty. they didnt give enough to the other girls, in my opinion.

Round Rainbow

One of the first major inspirations in my life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aX8zw06kZ8

*its titled Round Rainbow and the artist is Olafur Eliasson*

"This prism device transforms a gallery into a dynamic space bathed in rainbows of light and shadow. In a work that is scientific in one respect and sensual in another, the installation brings a phenomenon usually experienced in nature into the museum, encouraging people to interact with their environment in new ways."

Inspiration

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don't bother concealing your thievery--celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: 'It's not where you take things from--it's where you take them to'". -Jim Jarmusch
